I have really tried to get back into the habit of doing personal portrait sessions of my family more often. Sometimes I get so caught up in the business side of photography, I lose my ambition to be creative. Last week when I picked my daughter up from school, I thought to myself as she smiled at me and jumped into the backseat of my car, “good grief little girl, you are beautiful”. I told her this and she smiled bigger and proceeded to tell me about her day. She is never short on words. Her curls bounced in the wind as we rode down the street. She wiggled her loose bottom tooth and told me more about the Tooth Fairy – as if I had no idea who she was.
We get home and I ask her politely if I may photograph her. She grants me permission on the one condition that her puppies can be included in the quick photo shoot. Reluctant, I agree and we head into the studio. I wipe her afternoon snack off of her face and slip her into a huge gown I often use for maternity sessions. Folding and tucking tulle around her petite body I clamp the material in the back. She sits patiently and we begin. She is stunning. She is smart. She is magic.
