Why Are 6 Month Baby Milestone Photoshoots So Special?

Quite frequently, when you’re in the midst of new motherhood, you can’t see too far into the future.  The day-to-day of life can seem infinite and before you now it, weeks have past.  Your baby has now moved past the newborn phase and even requires a bit more effort to prop onto your hip.  This is why 6 month baby milestone photoshoots are so special, because they document the moments in between the newborn stage and the toddler stage.

Time is Fleeting

Have you ever thought about how quickly time flies when you’re enjoying life’s special moments? The 9 months you waited for the arrival of your new baby seemed like an eternity.  Meanwhile, quiet time snuggling with your baby doesn’t last long enough. That newborn scrunch your baby does when you pick them up and they curl into a fetal position? That lasts one to two months, max.  Fast forward, they’re now 6 months.  You look at the calendar and it seems like you’ve time traveled.  Life seems like a blur.

The Perfect Time to Capture Developmental Milestones

By this time, huge developmental milestones are happening with your baby.  At the very least, their cutest factor has multiplied by a thousand.  You can’t get enough of those gummy smiles and delicious rolls in their arms and legs.  So many physical changes are happening.  They may be able roll over in both directions, push themselves up while laying on their tummy, and sit up on their own.

Independent Sitting

I often recommend that we schedule your baby’s six-month, sitter-session when they begin to sit up independently. Sometimes this happens for babies at 6 months, and sometimes even as late as 8 months. The reason for the recommendation to have your milestone session at this time is because it’s a chance for us to see even more baby cuteness. They’re not frustrated or scared with falling over, and it gives us an opportunity to play more games to make them smile.

Here are some great ways to encourage and strengthen your baby’s sitting skills:

• Tummy Time

  • Not all baby’s love this, but it’s super important. A strong neck, back, and core muscles are essential for sitting. Plenty of tummy time helps build the strength needed to support their upper body.

• Use Propped Sitting

  • Sit baby with a Boppy pillow, rolled-up blanket, or between your legs to offer gentle support while they practice balancing.

• Encourage Reaching & Playing

  • Place a favorite toy just out of reach while baby is in a supported sitting position. This encourages them to engage their core muscles to stay balanced.

• Try a Seated Baby Position

  • Instead of laying flat, let baby spend time in a semi-upright position (like in your lap) so they get used to the feeling of sitting.

• Minimize Baby Gear Time

  • Too much time in swings, bouncers, or loungers delays core muscle development. Letting baby explore the floor helps them build natural strength.

• Make It Fun!

  • Use songs, clapping, and face-to face interaction to make sitting an engaging experience. Babies love watching and mimicking their parents!

Eye contact

Big Smiles and Belly Laughs

By this age, babies are usually smile big and laugh in response to sweet games like peekaboo. Gentle tickles and silly sounds also help prompt those adorable belly laughs too. This is also when their personality starts shining through, making it perfect time for joyful, candid family photos.

Pushing themselves up

Tummy-time and being able to push themselves up is such a huge milestone for babies. This stage signals growing strength, coordination, and curiosity.  It’s also a step closer to crawling, so get ready! It’s such a cute pose to photograph.

Holding onto feet

Any parent’s heart will melt when they see their six-month-old grab their tiny feet and place those little toes into their mouth. It’s a fun game of flexibility for them and they smile so big when they see how happy it makes their parents.

Baby rolls – rolls aren’t just for the dinner table

As a new mom you will absolutely adore seeing your baby’s developing chubby legs, thighs, and arms in portraits. They are such an adorable fleeting detail of babyhood. At six months, babies have those irresistible rolls on their thighs and dimples on their elbows, a hallmark of their healthy growth.

Updated Family Photos

This parenthood gig is no longer your first rodeo. A few months have past, and you’re coming into your own style of motherhood. Hopefully, you’re more rested as your baby’s sleep sessions get longer and longer.  You’re more refreshed and confident.  For some, this may also be the last few weeks of nursing.  Now is an awesome time to update those family photos. Another perk to having your family’s photos updated at your baby’s six month milestone is babies LOVE engaging with their parents at this age.

Big smiles, little giggles, and cuddly moments make for heartwarming family portraits. Capturing these interactions preserves the joy of this fleeting stage before they enter the busy toddler years.
