Birthday photo sessions are one of my favorite kinds of portrait sessions for a multitude of reasons. I get to celebrate the first year of LIFE with my clients…which is simply amazing. The tiny flutters in your tummy have thrived and grown into a miraculous tiny human and the first year goes by so quickly! One minute you’re holding a newborn and then you blink and your baby may even be walking by their first birthday! During my birthday celebration photo sessions we do a lot more in our studio than just smash a cake. My celebration sessions are intended for clients of any age because really – all birthdays deserve to be celebrated.
For babies specifically, I typically provide 2-3 wardrobe and set looks with the cake smash being the latter. I love capturing the simplicity of a baby in cozy clothing such as soft, organic, neutral pajamas from Burt’s Bees Baby clothing line or adorable jeans. Our studio offers clothing wardrobe options for boys and girls all the way up to size 4T so if going out to piece together an outfit is not a priority on your list, I welcome you to view the lovely items we provide our clients. Our birthday celebration photo sessions also include an adorable custom designed birthday cake from the very amazingly talented Custom Created Cakes by Brandi . Together, we will design a deliciously adorable cake with colors in mind based off of a personally developed image board created for each client. Leaving all of the preparation and guess work to us is just one of the fabulous services we provide.
Jose is simply one of the happiest babies I’ve met. His mommy and I recently met through a mutual friend and she was committed to having Jose’s first birthday portraits done and I was delighted she chose me! It was so lovely to meet Jose and his lovely parents at my home studio in Chandler. He was definitely a fast little bugger and wanted to roam and explore different areas of the studio. Most little guys are pretty curious when they are introduced to a new environment so this is totally expected. We tried a few things to keep him a tad restricted, like using a bucket, but nope…he popped his little tushy right out of that and stood up! So we sat him in a high chair – this seemed to slow him down a bit but gave momma quite a bit of anxiety as she was spotting right next to him in case he decided to lunge forward. We then gave him a stool – which he walked circles around giggling hysterically at us. Then he found the backdrop paper makes a loud noise when he bats at it…LOL…that was a fun one to try and distract him from. Usually, once babies have tapped on the backdrop paper they’re distracted for the better part of the session. What to do next? Well, we simply placed a cake in front of him and he went to town! He enjoyed the sweetness (and so did momma!) of the cake and laughed and giggled with glee. Baby giggles are the best – don’t you agree?
