“I’ll eat you up I love you so” is one of my favorite lines from the book, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. I have read this book many times to my son when he was younger. Each time I read that sentence I would deepen my voice, purse my lips a little, furrow my brows, tickle his stomach, and nibble a bit on his oversized cheeks. He had the cutest, fluffiest cheeks ever when he was a toddler. It was seriously hard to resist kissing or pinching him. I even nicknamed him Chipmunk, which I still call him and probably will forever.
Fast forward to sweet baby girl Evan and her adorable newborn baby features. The little glimpses of what you hope to never forget about as your child grows. The soft hair, tiny fingers and toes, and their pink lips that blow raspberry bubbles of milk. The delicious folds of their arms and legs and chubby cheeks make you want to just give them a nibble. Evan’s mommy and I discussed at length about our weird obsession with wanting to “eat” a baby. We laughed about how weird it sounds. After Evan’s newborn session, I did a little research to find out, “is it normal to want to ‘eat’ a baby”?
Good News:
According to an article online, it’s totally normal to want to chomp on your little chipmunk’s chunky cheeks! According to an article by the Association of Psychology Science this weird combination of emotions such as having tears of joy is referred to as “dimorphous expression” which help regulate positive emotions. I won’t get into to it too much but it’s definitely an interesting read. I skimmed the article enough to justify my concerns and assured myself that I didn’t need to be checked into a padded room facility. Rest assured, as much as the desire strikes me, I will NOT bite nor eat your baby!
